The #1 Tool you should be using in your Business

There are several reasons why this one tool is the most important one you should be using in your business but, there is one more important than all the others. First, let me tell you what this one tool is…an Email List! I know, I know, you were thinking I had some crazy tool no one had heard of yet but, before I lose you or you think that you don’t need one for your business let me tell you why you absolutely do!

The Most Important Reason

As you have noticed social media is making changes on what seems like a daily basis. You have absolutely no control over the changes that they make or what happens to your social media account. Know what you do have control over? Your Email List (that and your website if you are self-hosted and own your own domain). If you’ve been reading any of my past blog posts about social media and the changes that are coming (let alone the changes that are already here), you know that this is the perfect time to start your email list.

What it comes down to is this: You have no control over your social media account and you have no idea when Facebook will be replaced by another social channel that will leave you stuck building your audience all over again from the ground up {umm, no thank you!}. How much easier would it be for your business if you could hit send and invite all of your email list to the new social media channel? How much easier would it be to invite people who are new to your list to find you on your social media channels, without having to run Facebook ads?

This is your business and you should have control over every aspect of it that you can, including your audience and at no point in time should you ever be faced with losing your entire audience based on someone elses decision with their company.

There is a quick way to determine whether or not if this strategy would be good for you by answering this one question. Q: If you were to lose your audience on social media (be it Facebook, Instagram, or any of the others) would you lose your entire customer base/audience? If the A: is Yes, then you need to start building an email list. Which, let’s be honest…there is really no reason why you shouldn’t be building one.

*In no way am I saying that you shouldn’t use social media because it’s a great way to get in front of new people and even build your email list but, you should at all times have control of your customers and potential customers.

Reason #2

People on your email list are more likely to buy from you, even more likely than on social media. That means your email list has a better conversion rate than your Facebook fans, your Instagram and Twitter followers, and people who randomly find your website on search engines. I’d say that’s another pretty dang good reason to start building your email list today!

I’m sure you’re wondering why the heck this is. First of all, anyone who buys anything is more likely to buy from someone who they know, like, and trust. Second, it takes about 7 touches before the average consumer purchases something from you. This is not always the case but, it is the average! This is why it’s so important to be consistent in sending out emails and focused more on giving to your audience.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t find buyers elsewhere, it just means that you have to work a whole lot harder to get them than you do in other places. I’m all about working hard but, when it comes to running your business and making money, you should be making the best decisions you can! Building an email list just seems like a no-brainer once you know the facts.

Reason #3

Building Relationships! It’s so important to build relationships so that you get repeat clients. There is nothing harder than constantly having to find new clients over and over again. In every business I’ve ever had, I’ve built relationships with people who not only purchased more than once from me but, also told all of their friends about me and my business. When someone joins your email list they are pretty much guaranteed to be interested in what it is you’re doing or selling.

You can build your relationships not just by having people join your list but providing them with value. Before you snuff up your nose and think that this probably doesn’t apply to you let me tell you who it does work for: network marketers, boutiques, Etsy sellers, product-based businesses, service-based businesses, freelancers, coaches, and pretty much any that has a business.

The relationships you start building today could be the relationships that skyrocket your business years from now or even months from now!

Reason #4

Not only can you get in front of your audience on a consistent basis but, you can also spy on them. Let me explain! With most of the email marketing systems out there (this is who provides your email services such as MailChimp, Aweber, ConvertKit, Infusionsoft, etc…I am currently using ConvertKit and love it) you can track exactly what your customers or potential customers are interested in.  You’ll be able to see who opens why type of emails, who clicks certain links, what emails do the best, etc.

Knowing this type of information allows you to get even more specific and make sure that you are giving them what they want. You can even target emails for people who have taken a specific action on your email list. This can only inspire more people to take action and purchase from you because you’ll be giving them exactly what they want.

Now that you’ve decided you should probably get started building your email list, you’re wondering what’s next! Here’s some extra tips on what you should do the minute you realize that starting an email list is something you should start doing today.

Take Action!

One of the questions I get asked most is ‘When should I start building an email list?’, the answer: Yesterday! You want to start building your list the minute you even think about starting a business. This way you can get ahead that much quicker. If you’re like me and you’ve already started your business but, you thought maybe you didn’t need an email list and now you’re starting to realize that might be a mistake {hey, it’s okay…I did the same thing and made this huge mistake when I first started}…start NOW!

Be Aware!

I’m sure you have seen where tons of people have started an email list and have thousands of subscribers. It does take time for you to build an email list and it’s not an overnight thing, which is exactly why you need to get started right now. There are different things you can do to build your list quicker so that you just aren’t waiting for people to find your website and sign up.
