How to start attracting clients to your email list

Last week I went over the reasons why you should be using an email list so, this week I want to teach you the ways to attract them onto your list so that you can start building it. You know…instead of relying on wishing + hoping.

If you aren’t sure you need an email list and missed last weeks post you can find it here.

Here’s the recap of why you should be building an email list:
  • You own it, it’s all yours…much unlike your fans on social media accounts
  • It converts higher than anything else, including Facebook
  • You build relationships with people easier (less noise and distractions)
  • You’ll get to know your audience better because you can track their actions (and ask questions, etc).
  • It’s a great way to sell your products/services

Now that I forced convinced you to start building your email list and utilizing it in your business, I am going to tell you the best ways to start attracting clients to your list. In order to start grabbing your potential clients attention, you need one thing. A Magnetic Optin Offer.

Something that attracts the right kind of clients (who want what you have) and entices them to enter their name and email address. So, what the heck is a magnetic optin offer? It’s something that they need. It’s something they are wanting.

First, you need to figure out what it is that you can give your audience (potential clients). With a little brainstorming you can probably come up with a few ideas.

Here are some ways to find out exactly what they want from you.

  • Um, just ask them! Go to your social accounts and ask what they need that is related to your industry (such as: what are you needing help with, what would you like to see from us, what is something we could give you that you’d love, etc).
  • Brainstorm – what are you good at teaching, talking about, doing, etc. Write these ideas down and just brain dump them, then come back and make an organized list of ideas.
  • Create a form – create a form on your website that asks various questions related to your industry and ask what their level of knowledge is and of course, if they have any specific questions. When a huge percentage of people who fill out the form are lacking knowledge in a certain area, it might be a great one to start with.
  • Make a list of your most asked questions. If people are always asking you similar questions, it’s a good bet that other people would love to know as well and you can start here with ideas and create content related to your most asked questions.

Once you’ve decided on a topic you’ll have to decide what it is you’re going to want to decide what you give them and how you’ll create it. If you’re a boutique this may just be something simple as a discount code and you really won’t have much to create…unless you’re creating a style guide or something like that.

Some ideas what you can create on the topic you’ve chosen:

  • Worksheet
  • PDF
  • Checklist
  • Video
  • Guide
  • Ebook
  • Simple Email Text
  • + so many more ideas!

Sometimes this is as easy creating some text that goes into an email, although usually it’s best to create it in word, save it as a pdf, and attach it to the email so that they can print it out. I’ll brainstorm a few ideas with you so you can get a good idea.

  • Free recipe for DIY dog treats at home
  • My favorite tools for social media
  • My free guide to creating an optin offer 🙂
  • Free video on how to …. {be specific to your business and what your customers need}.

As you can see, these are just some random ideas for a variety of businesses. Obviously you want to stick pretty close to your industry. I help women start their business and get to their first $1K. Obviously, I wouldn’t want to give away a recipe for free dog treats as a way to get people to sign up to my email list. If I did this, I’d attract people who were interested in DIY, dog treats, and who-knows-what, instead of people interested in building their business.

What you create should be very specific to your industry! If you don’t help people get fit and lose weight than don’t send them workout tips or recipes. If you only do gardening then create an optin to help people organize their closet. When you find that perfect mix of something your potential clients want and something related very specifically to your industry, you’ll start attracting more people who are very interested in your business, instead of someone who just might be….and ‘might be’ is just a waste of your time.

Once you have decided what you want to offer your potential clients, you’ll need to get it set up {check out my free training on this below} and then send it out to your audience. This is the fun part! This is where you start building your list!

You’ll want to really start advertising this offer and putting it in front of the people you’re trying to attract! The more people who see it, the more that can sign up and get on your list. Here are a few ideas of how you can promote your new offer:

  • Give it out as your url instead of your website url.
  • Put it in your social media account descriptions. All of them!
  • Run Facebook Ads promoting your offer.
  • Post it to your social media accounts 2-4 times per week, depending on how many times you post to that channel
  • Add an optin form to your home page website, before the fold (the fold is what someone sees when they land on your page, below the fold is where you have to scroll down to see it)
  • Add an optin form to your blog posts

What do you think? Are you ready to start building your optin offer?
